Testimonial

Our stay was excellent! The fishing guide you provided was first class. As a fishing lodge you need some loan equipment for guests that have forgotten stuff - landing nets, even rods and reels complete with lure.

In the Area

Walking/Tramping

Many stunning and fascinating walks are located within 1 hour of the Lodge, perfect for those that like to walk for 2-6 hours at a time. The Rahu Saddle, approximately 1 hour south of the Maruia River Lodge has numerous day walks to choose from. The Klondyke Spur & Mt Haast walks are challenging however, on a clear day you will be rewarded with amazing views of the tops of the Victoria Ranges.  The Department of Conservation Walking/Track notes are recommended for all walks and are available from the Lodge Library. Gourmet Picnic lunches are prepared on request.

Maruia Falls

Just 5 minutes drive away down-river from the Lodge are the spectacular Maruia Falls - formed after a major landslip triggered by the infamous 1929 Murchison Earthquake.  Landslip debris diverted the Maruia River which then facilitated the erosion of a rock platform, forming these stunning falls.

Buller Gorge Swing bridge – New Zealand’s longest swing bridge!

15 minutes drive from the Lodge.  Enjoy the challenge of walking high above the rushing waters of the Buller River.  Cross back on the flying fox Comet Line!  Check out an old Gold Miner's cottage and try your hand at Gold Panning.

SUGGESTED DAY TRIPS

Reefton – ‘The Town of Light’

75 minutes drive from the Lodge.  Reefton was born on gold in the late 1860s and is famous for being the first place in Australasia to generate and reticulate its own electricity in 1888. Today, both coal mining and gold mining are still important to this vibrant little township which sits on the banks of the Inangahua River.  Visit the Bearded Mining Company Miners Hut based in the centre of Reefton - meet Gavin, Peter, Mark and Geoffrey who will fill you in on all the local history.

Cape Foulwind

Just outside Westport on the West Coast .  A stunning cliff top walk to the Cape Foulwind lighthouse takes you past a seal colony where you can watch seals frolicking with their pups on the rocks (about 90 minutes drive from the Lodge through the Buller Gorge). For a magic day out from the Lodge, take a picnic or dine at The Bay House Café and see Cape Foulwind and Punakaiki Rocks.

Punakaiki  (the Pancake Rocks)

Seeing the Pancake Rocks really is an experience not to be missed, especially if the tide is in and the blowholes are spouting!  The sub-tropical Wild West coastline is a memorable sight, and the path around the rocks is well-maintained.   There are also good cafes nearby.  The Rocks are about 100 minutes drive each way from the Lodge and should be in your itinerary if driving to or from the West Coast.
